Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturer depending on the country of origin. Images are provided as a reference only, the received medicine may vary in packaging, color, pill shape, etc, from one batch to the next. For an item marked "generic" any quality brand may be sent, however you will always receive the active ingredients ordered in the strength(s) ordered.
Bisacodyl is a laxative which has been in use since the 1950s. It is most commonly used as-needed to alleviate constipation, but is also frequently used to clear the bowels prior to certain medical examinations or procedures. A smaller percentage of patients buy Bisacodyl to manage certain types of bowel disorders.
This medication is known by a number of brand names, including Dulcolax, Durolax, Correctol, Nourilax, Fleet, Alophen and Carter's Little Pills. It is also possible to buy bisacodyl in generic form.
Bisacodyl Basics
Bisacodyl is a very effective laxative which primarily acts on the colon, where it promotes contractions. It also increases secretions in the colon, which softens stools and eases passage.
The medication is available in a range of formulations, including tablets, suppositories and enemas. The majority of patients prefer to buy bisacodyl in tablet form, though tablets take considerably longer to produce a bowel movement; typically 6 to 12 hours after administration. Suppositories take effect 15 to 60 minutes after administration, while enemas work in 5 to 20 minutes.
Effects are largely dose dependent, meaning a higher dose will have a more powerful effect. The standard dose is 5 to 10 mg per day. The vast majority of tablets contain 5 mg, while suppositories and enemas typically contain 10 mg. The maximum dose is 30 mg regardless of type of administration, and often produces a sudden, uncontrollable bowel movement. 30 mg doses are typically only given prior to medical procedures. Self-medicating patients should start with lower doses of 5 mg until effects are known.
In treating constipation, all forms of bisacodyl can be used as-needed in adults. If a dose fails to produce a bowel movement medical attention is warranted, as it may indicate a serious condition. Similarly, seek the advice of a doctor if bisacodyl (or any laxative) is needed for more than 7 consecutive days.
Using Bisacodyl Tablets
As previously mentioned, the vast majority of patients buy bisacodyl in tablet form. Tablets take 6 to 12 hours to produce a bowel movement; 8 hours is most common. Even at lower doses the urge to move the bowels can be sudden and powerful, so administration should be scheduled accordingly. Many patients prefer to take tablets at bedtime.
Only one dose should be taken per day, given the length of time between administration and result. 5 mg doses are advisable for the few uses, to determine the strength of results as well as the amount of time needed to achieve them.
Tablets should be swallowed whole and not be split, crushed, chewed or otherwise damaged. Milk and antacids should be avoided for one hour before or after taking tablets, as these substances can degrade the tablet coating. Damage to the tablet's coating may produce uncomfortable gastrointestinal side effects, such as nausea, cramping, flatulence and so forth.
Taking tablets with food is optional; a full glass of water is recommended.
Precautions & Side Effects
Patients with a history of rectal bleeding, intestinal blockage, or unexplained abdominal pain should not use this or any other laxative without doctor approval. Likewise, bisacodyl should not be given to patients under 12 years of age without doctor approval.
Side effects are usually mild, including:
More serious side effects are rare, but warrant medical attention:
Bisacodyl is considered safe for use in pregnancy or breast-feeding as long as use does not exceed 7 consecutive days.
